AAU 16u Nationals began this week with 32 4-team pools. After pool play had concluded the top two teams from each pool advanced to the championship bracket, while the 3rd and 4th place teams continued on to the classic bracket. The Hoop Group held their annual Academic Elite session at Albright College in Pennsylvania. In order to qualify to participate in the camp, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.2 GPA in the classroom, and at least an 1050 (Math/Reading Sections) on the SAT. The u17 Super Showcase had a unique set-up. In fact, it was really two separate tournaments. Every team in the field was separated into either the gold or silver divisions prior to the beginning of the week. Those two divisions played their own pool play games, bracket play games, crowned separate champions, and no overlapping competition. After handling Minnesota Pump n Run with ease in the semi-finals 55-37, the New England Playaz found a familiar foe waiting for them in the final of the prestigious Adidas Super 64 Tournament. Connecticut Basketball Club and the Boston Amateur Basketball Club both earned a trip to the gold bracket by sweeping all three of their pool play games at the sixteen-and-under Super Showcase. BABC and Expressions Elite both swept their three pool play games en route to the gold bracket. BABC defeated Leesburg TGFB 66-52, Louisiana Select 78-57, and then Cardinal-Robinson 48-33. Both the New England Playaz and Mass Rivals were a perfect 2-0 heading into Friday night’s games.
