Jamal Turner, who had previously committed to the University of Fairfield, has decided to reconsider his options. He now plans to play out his senior year and not sign a National Letter of Intent until the late signing period. While Turner says he will still consider Fairfield, he was beginning to feel as if he had rushed into his decision. “As it got closer and close to the signing period, I realized this is going to be one of the…

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. This past weekend, young players from the northeast region came together for the New England Regional Junior Phenom Camp sponsored by Adidas. They ranged from the fifth grade up to freshman year of high school, with our emphasis being on those in the older portion of that group. From our viewing on Saturday, the talent was very good and it wasn't just at one position. Oftentimes, guards dominate events like this, with the occasional one dominated by the big…

At this time last year Mike Howlett was beginning his first year at the New Hampton School having already committed to Lehigh University. When the school year ended Howlett had every intention of honoring that commitment until Head Coach Billy Taylor resigned in August to take a similar position at Ball State. With the beginning of the school year only a couple of short weeks away, Howlett resisted the temptation to make a rushed decision and instead returned to New…

Sometimes it isn’t just about going to the highest level. Jake O’Brien proved that Tuesday night when he called Boston University Head Coach Dennis Wolff to offer him a verbal commitment. By doing so the talented 6’8” forward spurned programs in the Atlantic 10 and CAA in order to stay close to home and have a chance to go to the NCAA tournament. “BU has been recruiting me for a long time now, and I’m real comfortable with their coaching…

The theme of this pre-season at New Hampton has clearly been improvement. When we visited the New Hampshire gym on Wednesday evening we were blown away by how much the five returning players had improved. Perhaps no player is a better example of this than Zach McBey. While earning playing time with the likes of Kendall Durant, Twany Beckham, Michael Topercer, Jeffrey Osborne, and Ennis Whatley all in the backcourt might prove to be an extremely daunting task, McBey deserves…

First came 6’1” point guard Steve Zazuri, then 6’5” forward Stanford Dulaire, next was 6’8” center Nick Greenbacker, and on Thursday 6’2” shooting guard Shane Gibson became the final local product to join Sacred Heart’s recruiting class. To the best of our knowledge, no other division I program has ever handed out four scholarships, in the same year, to players from Connecticut. Not only that, but these players are all home grown talents who attend local high schools within the…

It was a combination of factors that led Andrew Van Nest to decide to attend Harvard University, and ultimately it was just too good of an opportunity to turn down. “The education, the city feel on the campus, what Coach Amaker is trying to do, it was all just too good to pass up,” said the 6’10” forward. Not only will the big man have the opportunity to receive his education from one of the top academic institutions anywhere in…

Alex Oriakhi and Jamal Coombs have been practically inseparable in recent years. The duo first got together four years ago when they joined forces to play for the BABC. Two years ago they led BABC to the 15 and under AAU National Championship. Later that summer they both offered verbal commitments to the University of Connecticut, despite the fact that they still had three years remaining of high school. A month later they enrolled at the Winchendon School and now…

The New England Basketball community has been buzzing in recent weeks with anticipation over the upcoming NBA season. With the Boston Celtics bringing together Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, local fans are hoping the “Big Three” can lead the C’s back to the NBA crown. The Tilton School has their own version of the big three, and they are hoping that Alex Oriakhi, Jamal Coombs, and Jamal Turner will be able to lead them to the NEPSAC Class…

If one thing is certain about the national recruiting scene this year, it is that big men are in high demand. With an abundance of programs searching for the right fit in the middle, and so few options available around the country, players like South Kent’s Assane Sene have been in high demand. Despite not playing much on the summer AAU circuit because of a lingering thumb injury, the Senegal native was a prime recruiting target for places like the…
