South Kent’s Sene Makes Decision

If one thing is certain about the national recruiting scene this year, it is that big men are in high demand.  With an abundance of programs searching for the right fit in the middle, and so few options available around the country, players like South Kent’s Assane Sene have been in high demand.

Despite not playing much on the summer AAU circuit because of a lingering thumb injury, the Senegal native was a prime recruiting target for places like the University of Connecticut, West Virgina, Syracuse, and Virginia.  The Cavaliers have been on him the longest and ultimately that may be why they secured the services of the versatile big man.

Sene is listed at 7’0” and has amazing quickness and agility for a player that size.  He changes games on the defensive end of the floor with his ability to block/alter shots coming from a variety of angles, thanks to his quick leaping ability.  Offensively, the lefty can extend defenses with his ability to knock down the 15-18 foot jumper in rhythm.  But defenders should be warned against crowding him because he is equally smooth when putting the ball on the floor one time to get to the rim.  Although he isn’t a traditional center who plays solely with his back to the basket, the big man is still productive on the block.  In addition to having a few good moves in his repertoire he can rely on, he is also a developing passer who finds his teammates when they cut to the basket.

With all of those qualities it is easy to see why so many of the nation’s top programs were going hard after the big man, and consequently why this is such a significant addition for Dave Leitao and his staff.  UVA was able to land the verbal commitment even after Sene had recently taken visits to Connecticut and Syracuse.  Sene becomes the third member of UVA’s recruiting class joining center John Brandenburg and Sylven Landesberg, a high sought after guard from New York.
