Few players helped themselves more during the month of July than Shabazz Napier. The point guard took Orlando by storm as he put on a series of commanding performances over the course of the AAU Super Showcase and the AAU Nationals. Now Napier hopes to keep that recruiting attention coming as he will transfer to Lawrence Academy and reclassify to the class of 2010. Napier will fill the gap left by the graduation of Stevie Mejia, another point guard who…

As the camp directors told the campers first thing Monday morning, “this is not your ordinary camp. We’re going to get on you and we’re going to push you”. They weren’t kidding. Even potential high-major prospects like Carson Desrosiers, Evan Smotrycz, and Matt Brown weren’t immune to a tongue lashing when they made the occasional poor decision or lazy play. But to their credit, the kids listened, and raised their game as a result. Here are two quick stories as…

It has been quite a long time since we updated our rankings for the class of 2011. While we tried to catch glimpses of the youngsters as often as we could this spring and summer, we admittedly spent much more time evaluating the upper classmen. Consequently, this list should be thought much more of as a starting point then as hardened truth. After all, these players are very young, and lots can change in the next three years. One thing…

The Nike Global Challenge and Adidas Nations Basketball Experience are both taking place this weekend. The concept behind both events is similar; an eight team international tournament featuring some of the best young players around the world. With similar events and overlapping dates, the battle between the shoe companies to attract the top young players is now just as intense in August as it has traditionally been in July. The Nike Global Challenge, in conjunction with USA Basketball, began on…

When Carson Desrosiers’ high school career comes to an end in two years, he is likely to look back on the summer of 2008 as the time when he made his big break. Now, a week after the live period came to an end, he looks like a player destined for the highest levels of college basketball. The 6’10” big man from Central Catholic…

Coming into the month of July, the AIC coaching staff might have felt uneasy about still having an open scholarship. But good things come to those who wait, and it couldn’t have gotten much better for AIC than landing Isiah Wallace. Coming out of Sabis Charter (Springfield, MA) in the spring of 2007 Wallace already had division II scholarship offers on the table. But he nevertheless decided to head to prep school for an extra year and wound up at…

Here is a look at some of the local players who managed to separate themselves from the competition during the three day event. Eric Benvenuti: Arguably one of the top players at camp, Benvenuti was very consistent all week. He continued to shoot well from behind the arc, and displayed good ball skills. He showed off his toughness on the glass, and improved confidence around the basket.Matt Gibson: Gibson showed off much of the same skills that helped his stock…

Jesse Agel got his man. The first year Brown head coach wasn’t even recruiting Tucker Halpern when the month of July started, but after watching his impressive performance at the Hoop Mountain Academic All-American Camp, Agel and assistant coach T.J. Sorrentine quickly made the skilled forward one of their top priorities. For the rest of the month the duo recruited Halpern as hard as they possibly could. Whenever he stepped foot on the floor, no matter where it was, one…

Ben Crenca is a Catamount…or at least he will be beginning in the fall of 2009. The big man from Worcester Academy gave Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan a verbal commitment on Sunday afternoon. His commitment ends what had been a long and local recruiting battle, as there were a plethora of schools from the northeast hoping to land one of the few true low post players available this year. In fact, Crenca’s long list of scholarship offers included schools in…
