Hoop Mountain New York Super Showcase – Event Recap

Here is a look at some of the local players who managed to separate themselves from the competition during the three day event. 

Eric Benvenuti: Arguably one of the top players at camp, Benvenuti was very consistent all week. He continued to shoot well from behind the arc, and displayed good ball skills. He showed off his toughness on the glass, and improved confidence around the basket.

Matt Gibson: Gibson showed off much of the same skills that helped his stock rise throughout the spring and summer. He ran his team well, making solid decisions and distributing throughout the week. He was able to knock down open looks and keep quicker guards off balance throughout the camp.

C.J. Moss: Moss showed off his skills as the ultimate combo guard. He was confident attacking the basket and showed greater confidence in his outside shot. He continued to distribute the basketball well, and showed a great deal of toughness throughout camp.

Alex Levine: Alex had a consistent week as he continued to do many things well throughout the camp. At 6'6” and with very good balls skills, he is able to be a major threat on the offensive end. He also showed off his athletic ability on defense, working the glass and being a weak-side shot blocker.

Sean Bertanza: The Connecticut native headed for a prep year at Trinity Pawling (NY) impressed many with his outside shooting capabilities. The 6'2’ wing with good length consistently knocked down the three-point shot all week.  A year to get stronger and better off the bounce could make him a solid D3 prospect.

Corey Cooper: The recent 2008 Brockton High School grad continued a strong summer of play, as he looks for a program for next season. The 6'2” wing showed off his toughness and passion for the game all week, as he consistently attacked the basket and was a force on the boards.

Max Barbosa: The Cathedral High School product made a name for himself at camp, showing off explosive quickness and an ability to make plays. Barbosa is a small combo guard, but offsets that with an ability to make shots, attack the rim, and distribute.

Additional notes:

Two players attending Lee Academy in the fall from Buffalo were at camp. 6'0” guard Jonathan Marsh (2009) is a solid point guard.  With his good handle, if he can get a little stronger and improve his perimeter jumper he is a potential low major recruit. 

6’10” rising sophomore Chris Coleman may have been the best overall prospect.  He is an absolute beast for his grade and very tough when he wants to be.  Like many young players he still needs to learn to play hard on every possession.  But he has plenty of tools including a decent touch from the perimeter, an ability to run the floor, and get off his feet quickly.  Overall, he still needs a lot of polish, but at the end of the day he is a big time prospect.
