Beantown Hoops hosted several of the MIAA's top programs this weekend for their second annual Fall Shootout. St. John's Prep picked up right where they left off last season, taking this particular pre-season title behind the strong play of Steve Haladyna, who appears poised to assert himself even more this season with Pat Connaughton having moved on to Notre Dame. NERR contributor Lucas Shapiro was on hand to capture the action on video and he tells us that one of…

It’s hard to overstate just how far the Vermont Academy’s basketball program has come in the last two years. They used to be the perennial doormat in class B of the NEPSAC, taking annual poundings from most of the league’s serious basketball programs and calling a run to the post-season a best case scenario. When New Hampshire native Jesse Bopp took the reins of the program last year and not only opted to play in the newly formed class AA…

Not many prep school programs work quite as hard to establish a brand as does Northfield Mount Hermon. For several years now head coach John Carroll has worked to portray his program as “the best combination of academics and basketball in the United States,” as it states in the opening sentence of the introductory letter to college coaches this year. While the claim could once be construed as fairly bold, NMH now has the numbers to add support. Of the…

Quinnipiac needed a point guard in the class of 2012 and they got their man on Saturday when they received a commitment from Kendrick Ray from Middletown High School in New York while he was on campus for an official visit. This was Ray's second trip to Quinnipiac's campus after visiting unofficially in early August. Ray is a scoring point guard known for his ability to make shots in bunches from long range. It may have been only a year ago, but already lots has changed since the last Elite 75 Showcase – Frosh/Soph Edition. At the time, Noah Vonleh might have been an already proven prospect on the local circuit but still an unknown at the national level. He dominated the Frosh/Soph showing an improved skill set that let him handle the ball and create off the dribble with his powerful frame. Less than two months later he would make his national…

Today marks the beginning of the NCAA contact period, meaning division I college coaches are permitted to conduct “in-person, off-campus evaluations and contacts.” Essentially, that means coaches are permitted to attend school workouts and meet with prospects and their families for in-home visits. For New England in particular, this means it’s the beginning of “open gym season.” While the contact period allows coaches to evaluate prospects, they are only allowed to do so at the prospect’s high school gym and…

Mitch McGary was on an official visit to North Carolina on Wednesday and scheduled to travel eight miles up the road for an official visit to Duke later in the week. The second ranked overall prospect in the most recent ESPNU 100, McGary was expecting to see some familiar faces on both trips. At North Carolina, he was expected to be joined by his incoming teammate at Brewster Academy, T.J. Warren, a six-foot-seven small forward from Durham, North Carolina. Warren…

The second New England Elite 75 Showcase – Frosh/Soph Edition had the daunting challenge of following the event’s highly successful debut in 2008, but by once again assembling some of the top up and coming talent in New England the encore might have even surpassed the original. While 2008 had four future top 100 prospects in attendance, 2009 went one better with five (and counting) as Wayne Selden, Kuran Iverson, Goodluck Okonoboh, Georges Niang and Kris Dunn all went to…

There's a reason schools jockey to try and be the first school to get a prospect on campus. Maryland showed why this weekend as they were able to make such an impression on Jake Layman's official visit that he cancelled his other scheduled trips to Florida, Louisville, and Kansas. “Right when I saw the Comcast Center I was amazed,” Layman told ESPN's Dave Telep on Monday night. “It’s huge compared to some of the other schools I’ve seen. At the…

When Ricardo Ledo first committed to Providence College it was the night of Christmas Eve. His second commitment to his hometown school came on Labor Day. Just four days after he cancelled a press conference where he was scheduled to announce his commitment to the Friars, Ledo gave his word on Monday. Now the question becomes when will he arrive at Providence and where will he head in the interim. ESPN's Andy Katz is reporting that Ledo may not return…
