Frosh/Soph Flashback 2009
The second New England Elite 75 Showcase – Frosh/Soph Edition had the daunting challenge of following the event’s highly successful debut in 2008, but by once again assembling some of the top up and coming talent in New England the encore might have even surpassed the original.
While 2008 had four future top 100 prospects in attendance, 2009 went one better with five (and counting) as Wayne Selden, Kuran Iverson, Goodluck Okonoboh, Georges Niang and Kris Dunn all went to work that day.
At the time Iverson and Okonoboh were the guys with the biggest reps. Selden and Niang were guys who were consistently putting up big numbers but just starting the show the physical upside that has made them the players they are today. Selden was a six-foot-one forward at the time while Niang was just starting to stretch and tone his frame.
Dunn had just come off an all-state performance in his freshman season at New London but still somewhat under the radar on the grassroots circuit. Two years and three inches later and he is nopw ranked as one of the top two point guards in the country.
The 2009 event was also a springboard for Akosa Maduegbunam. While he may be headed to Penn State to play in the Big 12 now, he didn’t have much of a rep back then, barely getting off the bench for Cushing Academy and having just returned to Charlestown High School as a result.
2009 was also the debut performance of Rodell Wigginton who had people captivated by his explosiveness and six-foot-five frame at the time.
Others in attendance who have gone on to become some of the top prospects in New England include Cornelius Tyson, Nate Anderson, Chris Braley, Cane Broome, Aaron Calixte, Kaleb Joseph, Jacquil Taylor, Jake Fay, Kamali Bey, Andrew Chrabascz, John Powell, and more.
The 2011 New England Elite 75 Showcase - Frosh/Soph Edition will be held on Saturday, September 17th at Mansfield Sports Plex. Limited spots remain available for the event and nominations are still being accepted by emailing us at [email protected].
