Satchell Headed South

UMBC has had very good fortune in the past recruiting players who have been developed at Windsor High School.  Six years ago they signed an undersized power forward named John Zito.  Despite the fact that Zito was flying under many people’s radar at the time, the Retrieves didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger.  The Windsor native went on to have a hugely successful career, being a two time team captain and an All-America East selection in his senior year.

Friday night UMBC landed another player whose best days are likely still in front of him as Adrian Satchell made a verbal commitment to play for head coach Randy Monroe.  Monroe’s first year assistant coach, John Zito, was the lead recruiter…yes the same John Zito.

It isn’t too far a stretch to think that perhaps Zito saw a lot of himself in Satchell.  Like Zito, Satchell is a player who can play either forward position and can score inside and out.  Like Zito, Satchell is a player who has been well schooled on the fundamentals of the game and disciplined to play both ends of the floor under the tutelage of Windsor head coach Ken Smith.  And like Zito, Satchell is a player that many schools may regret letting slip away in the future.

And so Satchell will follow in the footsteps of another Windsor graduate and head to UMBC, a school that made their first trip to the NCAA tournament last season after winning the America East Conference championship.

But before heading to Maryland, Satchell will be looking to pick up some hardware of his own.  He and Steve Samuels will lead a deep and talented Windsor team this year, which has to be considered one of the early favorites to take one of the CIAC state championships.
