Nelson Picks Stags
Fairfield picked up their second commitment in as many days on Monday as BABC and Central Catholic guard Tyler Nelson committed less than 24 hours after the Stags picked up a pledge from six-foot-eight power forward Kevin Degnan.
Together, Degnan and Nelson will provide one of the top defensive teams in the MAAC with a significant boost of offense. Degnan is a skilled and highly versatile inside-out four-man, while Nelson was very possibly the best available three-point shooter in New England.
Nelson’s long range marksmanship was on full display this summer as he shot over 47% from the three-point line during the EYBL season. That production led to wide-ranging division I recruitment with numerous offers coming since the beginning of the AAU season.
Nelson took a proactive approach to his recruitment, taking a number of official visits in June, prior to the second evaluation period of the grassroots season in July.
He reportedly came away very impressed with his trip to Fairfield, both because of the quality of their academic programs as well as their commitment to athletics.
In Nelson, Fairfield is getting a player who has distinguished himself with more than just his outside shooting. He’s a highly intelligent player with a heady floor game and a well rounded skill set. As he continues to fill out physically and get stronger, he’s only likely to become more valuable and versatile.
Also noteworthy is the fact that Nelson has played for the same high school and AAU teams since arriving at the high school level, which is almost unheard of in today’s day and age of youth basketball.
