Sampson Carter became the third player to sign with UMass during the early signing period late last week, joining Freddie Riley and Javon Farrell. Carter’s commitment doesn’t come as a surprise to those who know him, as his ties with the UMass staff run long and deep. In fact, his older brother Shyrone currently serves on the UMass staff after having worked with Minuteman head coach Derek Kellogg at the University of Memphis. “Sampson is a young man I have…

Like any all-star type game, Tuesday night’s action featured its fair share of highlight reel plays. But there was a 20 second span in the midst of the junior game that was by far the night’s most entertaining. It began when Cromwell’s Isaiah Salafia streaked down the middle of the court with Windsor’s Ishmael Kalilou being the sole defender back to protect the basket. Salafia elevated, and so did Kalilou, but the mid-air contact was just enough to allow the…

Three days, 22 teams, 21 games, 250 college prospects, and over 175 college coaches. There is plenty to reflect upon when looking back on this year’s National Prep Showcase, but here are some of the major storylines coming out of the weekend. Bridgton is BackLast year was the first time in four years that Bridgton Academy didn’t win the class A title. If this weekend was any indication, Whit Lesure’s team certainly has to be considered an early favorite in…

Brewster Academy 71 Stoneridge 66Brewster bounced back from a disappointing opening game at the showcase to score a hard fought and emotional win over Stoneridge. Despite not shooting a good percentage from the floor, Naadir Tharpe did a nice job running the point for Brewster, scoring 11 points and handling out 8 assists against just 1 turnover. But the real story was the dominance of Andrew Fitzgerald inside as he finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds in his match-up…

Findlay College Prep is a tremendous high school basketball team, completely deserving of their #4 national ranking in the current USA Today Poll, and probably deserving of an even higher ranking. But if Findlay is one of the best three or four teams in the country, then St. Mark’s has to be in the top ten. The defending NEPSAC Class C Champions gave the Las Vegas powerhouse everything they could handle on Saturday night before eventually falling 80-76. Not only…

Massanutten Military Academy 74 St. Thomas More 62Massanutten shot the ball tremendously well from the perimeter in the first half en route to opening up an 18 point lead. But St. Thomas More gradually chipped away and made a valiant effort with a late run in the second half. Unfortunately, however, the deficit was simply too big to overcome. To no one’s surprise Dan Jennings are Anell Alexis were the primary contributors for STM. Jennings used his size and power…

When the signing period began ten days ago all signs indicated that Johnnie Lacy would play the season out and wait to make his decision in the spring. But one Big East program wouldn’t take no for an answer, and now Lacy is set to head to Providence College for the next four years after signing his National Letter of Intent yesterday. “I really like their coaching staff,” Lacy told scout.com’s Evan Daniels. “They said the ball would be in…

Southern New Hampshire just got a steal. The Penmen received a National Letter of Intent from 6’5” guard Hanell Velez, one of the best players in Northern Massachusetts. Velez committed to SNHU after receiving division I interest from a variety of other schools. We would expect Velez to make an immediate contribution upon arriving in New Hampshire. With his size and SNHU’s style of play, Velez will be versatile enough to see action at any of four different positions. But…
