STM’s Jere Quinn Recovering from Illness
St. Thomas More head coach Jere Quinn is undoubtedly one of the godfathers of prep school basketball.
The Chancellors program, and the St. Thomas More School itself, has very literally been his life's work and he has plenty to show for his 41 years on the sidelines including over 1,000 career wins, a nomination to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and a countless number of lives he's changed in the process.
This spring though, Quinn was hospitalized and diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks its nerves and creates a paralyzed like state. He's been either hospitalized or in an rehab facility since, but is now just a couple of weeks from returning to his home.
The New London Day did a full feature on Quinn's battle with the disease on Monday.
Prior to his illness, Quinn had started to spearhead a fundraising initiative to renovate the gymnasium including the floor, scoreboard, lights, bathrooms, basement, and even bleachers. Former STM star and current Detroit Pistsons center Andre Drummond has already made a sizable donation but the school is hoping to finish the project in Quinn's absence.
