Leo Curtis Chooses ASU
On Friday, Iceland native Leo Curtis of CATS Academy announced his commitment to the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Curtis arrived in New England this fall as one of the most sought-after prospects in the region, and his arrival even made waves on the national level.
In just a few months, the 7-foot-1 big man picked up scholarship offers from Alabama, West Virginia, Xavier, Indiana, Creighton, Stanford, and ultimately, Arizona State.
Last season, Curtis showcased his talent with IR Reykjavik in Iceland, where he posted impressive averages of 15.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting an efficient 42.2% from three-point range over 31 games.
He also represented his country on the international stage, competing with Iceland’s U20 national team this past summer and contributing 5.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game.
While Curtis picked up a ton of momentum in the fall open gym season, he’s proved to be a vital cog for CATS Academy this season.
As things stand right now, CATS is 11-2 on the season and recently was voted #11 in the NERR National Prep Coaches Poll. The program looks primed to make noise in the postseason of their second year in AA of the NEPSAC.
Curtis’s towering stature and mobility at that size are obvious assets, but it’s his skill set that sets him apart. He’s able to space the floor from outside efficiently and has done so in multiple high-level settings throughout his young career.
On the interior, his combination of touch and footwork stands out as he’s able to get scoring opportunities in the post.
Outside of scoring the basketball, Curtis’ playmaking and defensive traits are noteworthy. He’s able to make the right passes in the post or on the perimeter, and alter shots that come his way.
As he continues to adapt to the faster pace of the game in the United States and work on playing through contact, the upside he brings is evident.
The Icelandic prospect’s move to the U.S. helped solidify his reputation as a high-major talent, and Arizona State wasted no time in landing him.
With Curtis now set to join the Sun Devils, his unique blend of size, skill, and international playing experience will no doubt be a major asset to Bobby Hurley’s program in the years to come.
