Chaneys Recruiting Reaching New Levels

Before the beginning of the July live period Allan Chaney was already a well accomplished prospect. At 6’9 he was intriguing to many college coaches because of his rare combination of size and skill. That alone was enough to warrant scholarship offers from the likes of Providence, Fordham, UMass, Rhode Island, and several others.
But after scoring 15 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in his first game at Reebok U it was clear Chaney’s recruiting was about to go to another level.
“Reebok U was a great experience,” Chaney said. “It really lifted my confidence. It showed me I can compete with anybody.”
Following that performance an offer from St. Joseph’s quickly followed. From there it was on to the Reebok Summer Classic East where his strong play continued. And after another dominating performance came another scholarship offer as the University of Virginia became the latest school to step up to the plate.
The last stop was a visit to the Triple S Harley Davidson Classic where Chaney led his Connecticut Phenom Elite team to the tournament’s championship game. All the while the talented forward was being followed by the likes of Florida, Connecticut, Boston College, Texas A & M, Ohio State, West Virginia, and many others.
A day later came a scholarship offer from the two time defending national champions, the University of Florida, in addition to Boston College.
So who could see this explosion coming?
“I always thought he had the potential,” said his long time AAU Coach Kalvin Bunkley. “He’s always had the skill set. It was just a matter of him setting his mind to it…I was expecting him to blow up in college. It was hard to imagine him doing all this in a 10 day period.”
Even the emerging star himself had to admit, “I wasn’t expecting Florida to offer as quickly as they did”.
So what’s next for one of the nation’s hottest prospects?
“I’m going to try to cut my list down by the end of August and then make my decision before the [high school] season starts,” said Chaney.
But his coach is quick to help his protégé keep things in perspective.
“He’s still a kid at heart,” said Bunkley. “He’s looking forward to going to Vegas and playing his last AAU tournament with his teammates…After that he will make some decisions. But he has to get to know these new coaches. People like Fordham and Providence have been there since the beginning.”
One thing is for sure…there are a lot of college coaches anxious to get to know Allen Chaney these days.
