Transfer Profile: Isaac Gonda

Just a month ago, it was announced that 2027 F/C Isaac Gonda would be joining Albany Academy.

The Canadian prospect will join the Albany Academy squad in New York after competing at Bella Vista Prep in Arizona over the past two seasons. Gonda has also competed on two major AAU circuits: the Adidas 3SSB circuit with Dream Vision and the EYBL circuit with UPlay.

Gonda possesses a combination of size and offensive skill that has already earned him offers from Division I teams such as Oregon, Xavier, and UC Riverside.

Coming in at 6 '11, Gonda is more than the presence you expect from a traditional big man of his size; he also has a polished skill set that allows him to be effective away from the basket. When Gonda is around the rim, he does a great job of making himself available for his guards and has great hands for receiving dump-offs and passes out of ball-screen actions.

Gonda does a great job of keeping the ball secured and high when smaller defenders step in and attempt to disrupt his finishes with swipe-downs attempts and still finishing through that type of contact. His length gives him the ability to finish over traffic, but he also has shown he has the strength and touch needed to finish when he is met with physicality around the rim.

What really makes Gonda pop as a prospect is his ability to step all the way out to the three-point line and be effective. He is comfortable stepping into catch and shoot threes, and partners this range with a high release point that makes it very difficult for defenders to contest. That ability to shoot the ball pulls opposing big men out of the painted area and gives both himself and his teammates additional space to attack the rim.

Gonda does not limit his shooting ability to catch and shoot opportunities. He has also displayed the ability to put the ball on the floor and step into dribble pull-ups or get all the way to the rim and finish with power or finesse. That combination of shooting and finishing is already intriguing and will continue to develop at Albany Academy. That ability to score in a multitude of ways makes him a very tough cover for opposing defenses, and I believe he will be putting the other team in “pick-your-poison" situations all season long.

On the defensive end of the floor, Gonda’s size alone is a natural deterrent that makes opponents think twice before attempting shots around the rim with him in their vicinity. He contests shots well, occupies space well and clogs up the paint, and finishes defensive possessions by being a constant presence on the glass. He is also athletic and fluid enough to beat other bigs down the floor and establish position early.

Being a part of the New England prep scene will help him develop his consistency, strength, and comfort level competing against high-level teams and players. Gonda has the tools needed to be a versatile frontcourt piece at the Division I level. Albany Academy will provide Gonda with the chance to test his unique skill set in the New England prep landscape while continuing to garner interest and offers from Division I programs.
