Transfer Profile: Austin Workman
This past March, Austin Workman and The MacDuffie School announced that Austin would be joining the program for a postgraduate year.
Workman completed his last 4 seasons at Morris Catholic in the NJAC. This past season, he would reach the 1000 point milestone and cap off a terrific year by winning NJAC Player of the Year. Along with both of those recent accomplishments, Workman would be a huge part in Morris Catholic capturing the Morris County Tournament Championship in back-to-back years.
Austin spent his time on the AAU circuit at first with NJ Beasts on the MHC, and this past Spring playing with NYC Honor 17U MHC, being a focal point to success with both groups but truly bursting onto the scene these past two seasons.
Workman has collected multiple Division 2 offers over the past few years across the CACC, ECC, and PSAC. This past January receiving a Division 1 offer from Florida International University.
The 6 '6 wing is a very intriguing prospect, at Morris Catholic improving on his stat line each year while being able to take on a larger role. He has shown he can work both off the catch or beat a defender putting the ball on the floor. Workman can score on all 3 levels effectively, making him a difficult guard. Effectively using his length around the rim and gets shots off cleanly over tight defense.
Outside of Austin’s deep offensive ability, one thing that stands out is his knack for collecting steals and blocks. In his Junior and Senior season compiling over one of each per game. Utilizing his length and athleticism to his advantage, pairing this with his skill to get in between the passing lanes. He continues to prove there is much more to his game than just his offense.
Workman plays with a sheer level of confidence; it seems he truly is comfortable anywhere on the floor with or without the ball. It shows in his quick trigger on the catch and attacking defenders no matter their size from the outside. Whether that is creating a shot from beyond the arc, working himself into the mid-range, or getting to the rim. He invites contact and can certainly play through it, showing in his ability around the rim, or using his body to create space for a jumper. On the other end, it shows in his defensive numbers and the way he picks up those outside of his typical position on the wing.
Austin Workman is a fantastic postgraduate addition for Coach Steiner and Coach Exler at the MacDuffie School. As his game has continued to grow and improve over his high school career, I expect this trend to continue at MacDuffie. During this postgraduate season, Austin should see more Division I recruitment during this season in the NEPSAC. He is certainly one to watch this upcoming season, with continuous improvement to his game and a true upward trajectory.
