Zimmerman poised for a big year
The Waturbury, CT native spent the summer working on his game and everyone that has seen him this fall has left the gym very impressed with his play. The scoring point guard has looked great in open gyms and has PSA ready for a tough schedule, as the Mustangs have gone independent and will meet Brimmer and May, Marianapolis Prep, and St. Andrews, among others.
TaQuan Zimmerman was great at a recent open run, controlling the game from the point position and scoring in high volume. He was extremely effective using his strong frame to create his own shot and was very consistent knocking down long jumpers off the bounce. Used the dribble to attack gaps and his deep penetration resulted in opportunities for others.
The long hours in the gym have paid off, as Zimmerman is hearing from a variety of college coaches at the division I and division II levels. Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut State of the Northeast Conference and NJIT of the Great West have all shown interest. Nearly every school in the highly competitive Northeast-10 Conference has inquired about the point guard as well.
The coaching staff at Putnam Science Academy knew they were getting a playmaking point guard that was capable of scoring in a variety of ways and creating for others. Taquan filled up the stat sheet last year at Holy Cross averaging 17 points and 6 assists per game. However, coach Tom Espinosa and staff have been just as impressed with the outstanding leadership Zimmerman has displayed. “He’s very coachable and is a great teammate,” was how assistant coach Josh Godley described Zimmerman. He also added, “Taquan’s very excited for the season”.
If it’s anything like his fall, he should be…
