Youngsters Shine at Hazelton Camp
The Scott Hazelton Basketball Camp always features some of the top up and coming high school prospects around. But after the older kids were done playing this week, we stuck around to get a sneak peak at some of the youngsters on hand as the middle school kids took to the court.
We told you about Noah Vonleh earlier in the week, but he was just the beginning of the talented rising freshmen on hand.
Also impressive was Yowell Beroa, a 6-foot-2-inch swingman with tremendous athleticism. Beroa made several plays going to the rim offensively but was particularly impressive on the defensive end where he has ability beyond his years.
Brandon Malloch is an extremely versatile young player who can play all three perimeter positions. He’s probably best described as a big wing but he does a little bit of everything and is an especially good passer.
Also catching our eye was Doug Gemmel who was productive both inside and out, showing a nice skill set and the ability to make open shots from a variety of different spots on the floor.
Wesley Cueves (pictured) was the most impressive rising 8th grader we saw in action. He’s a lightning quick lefty point guard who can break his man down off the dribble and lock up on the defensive end.
Lenny Cepeda was the cream of the crop for the incoming 7th graders. This kid is a pure shooter but he’s also plenty capable of getting to the rim and a pretty good athlete as well.
The Scott Hazelton Basketball School was a great opportunity for these young players for a couple of different reasons.
First, they joined a number of top high school prospects on the camp roster and that provided them with a first hand look at how hard players like Jordan Laguerre work every day to take their games to new levels.
Secondly, the youngsters got excellent instruction with a different focus on each of the four days of camp. After things got started on Monday, Tuesday’s instruction emphasized offense, Wednesday team defense, and Thursday transition basketball.
