Woumn Earns D1 Scholarship
Three years ago when Boston native Tommy Hubbard committed to East Tennessee State most people couldn’t figure out the connection. Three years later a second BABC product, Ryan Woumn, is heading to the Atlantic Sun powerhouse and the path from Boston to Johnson City, Tennessee is much more clear.
After Woumn returned from his official visit on Friday, his father, Dave Woumn, credited BABC head coach Leo Papile for arranging the visit.
"A lot of the teams who were looking at Ryan were doing so because of Leo's influence and knowledge of recruiting," Woumn told Steve Krause from the Daily Item.
And if you are East Tennessee State head coach Murry Bartow, you can bet that Papile’s word means quite a lot.
Three years ago Hubbard was a player without much division I interest until Papile helped him get to ETSU. Now he is the leading scorer and top defender for an East Tennessee State team that has made consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament.
Woumn leaves high school with a winning tradition of his own, having led Lynn English to a state championship as a junior and a 20-1 regular season record as a senior, while scoring 25 points per game. He earned All-Scholastic honors from the Boston Herald in both seasons.
“It’s always been my dream to play at a Division 1 college ever since I started playing basketball,” Woumn told the Herald’s Danny Ventura. “I came down here for my visit and the people were so friendly. Everywhere you go, everyone says hello. I met the coaches and really liked everything about them.”
