Williams-Crawford to Towson

The 6’7 Swiss-Army knife in Jaylin Williams-Crawford is headed down to Maryland to join Pat Skerry and the Towson Tigers.

Williams-Crawford detailed his choice by saying, “My relationship with the coach and how long they’ve been recruiting me…somewhere I feel like I can impact the program as a freshman”.

For all of the CAA/Towson basketball watchers, they know that Skerry emphasizes a hard-nosed physical defense, and this is a part of Jaylin’s game that he prides himself in.

Williams-Crawford’s athleticism allows him to rotate on switches, guarding the 1-4. Jaylin, who plays his high school ball for CATS Academy, has been praised by many as one of the best defenders in New England.

Skerry’s offensive system is the perfect complement to his defensive style. He relies heavily on constant movement. Whether it's running a structured set (Horns), cuts, and off-ball screens, there is no standing still in his system. This suits Jaylin perfectly, as he is always thinking ahead, cutting towards the rim, and finding that open hardwood. When he isn’t flying above the rim for a tough finish through contact, he is creating for others.

Jaylin has told me through some early discussions with Skerry his role has been outlined as “...being on the wing and able to knock down shots efficiently…make and create for other guys with my passing ability…being the best defender on the court.”

This is a kid that Coach Skerry is going to adore coaching as his basketball IQ and high motor is amongst the best in New England.

Williams-Crawford's stock saw a significant jump this summer as he took part in Peach Jam with Expressions Elite.

In 7 games, his splits were 11.4 / 7 / 1.1. He shot an efficient 53.6% from the floor and added 2 double-doubles throughout the tournament as well. In addition to his statistical achievements during this tournament, he was also named a part of the Peach Jam All-Breakout team by The Circuit.

A point of emphasis for Jaylin during this offseason was to improve his efficiency with the 3-ball and become more comfortable with the ball in his hands. He feels that once he can develop both of these skills that “the sky is the limit,” and I could not agree more.

Jaylin just completed his first season at CATS Academy (after transferring from Charlestown HS) and made an instant impact as he was named Co-Defensive POTY and Honorable Mention in the NEBL. He was a nice piece for the run CATS made to the NEPSAC AA championship game this past March, as well as their first National Prep Championship appearance.

For Williams-Crawford, this commitment is more than just the next step; it’s a chance to display his growth on a bigger stage. Towson is getting a player who embodies Skerry’s tough brand of basketball, if his NEBL and Peach Jam performances are any sign of what’s ahead, Jaylin’s impact in the CAA could be felt sooner rather than later.
