Welcome to New England Davon Maloney
Davon Maloney from the Newman School in Boston is looking to build upon a solid 2025 AAU season with City Rocks EYBL 16U. The 6’8 forward provides an intriguing skillset and should be a 2027 prospect to keep tabs on.
When watching Maloney his length and fluidity for his size and age really stands out. He uses his length to provide a real impact on defense and as a rebounder. He’s a terror on the glass with solid leaping and good timing already. He also has shown to be a versatile defensive piece and did not have trouble making plays in any role on the defensive side.
The defense and rebounding are what gives him a clear floor and keeps his impact consistent. He has some positives on offense though. He has shown he’s very capable of moving the ball and being a solid connector. Though not advanced, the handle has shown to be enough to attack close outs, which is admittedly a good sign for his age.
You would like to see him settle less and draw more fouls at the rim but these are common gripes with players his age. While his touch from the perimeter will ideally become more consistent in time, he has shown to be capable of hitting 3s off the catch at a solid clip.
The 3 point shooting and form does give you hope that he can become a somewhat useful shooter very soon, especially adjusting for his size.
Maloney is definitely the play finishing type as opposed to having a bunch of shot creation in his game. He has looked most comfortable attacking closeouts from kicks, hitting spot-up jumpers, and finishing dump offs and put-backs in the paint. Leveraging solid 3 point efficiency with solid enough assisted play finishing at the rim will be key for his offense.
Projecting Davon Maloney to the next levels is very interesting as he does have high-level pro traits to utilize. Maloney’s claim to fame will undoubtedly have to be his defense and rebounding. As a defender he was very active and made plenty of plays playing 16u (3.3 stocks per40 (stl+blk) & 9 Drebs (per40).
He looks best when acting as a weakside rim protector and perimeter switcher that can help his guards out seamlessly in screen situations. He’s plenty active enough, so his defensive playmaking and rebounding should only improve and become more valuable.
His offensive rebounding is also extremely impressive (5.5 Orebs per40). With the value of defense and offensive rebounding these days it would be in his best interest to keep improving those skills.
Maloney has shown some feel and 3 point shooting on offense that could provide some hope for his overall offensive impact. Maloney’s passing was solid for City Rocks (4 Asts per40) and the 3 ball wasn’t too shabby either (35% on 30 3pr).
Will Sydnor (Manhattan’s MAAC frosh of the year) or Gavin Walsh (Binghamton Soph.) are alike profiles due to the intersection of high-level rebounding, solid feel, and capable spot-up shooting.
Overall, Maloney has real floor-raising skills and enters a prime spot to continue to flourish with two years left to play at the high school level. Per his Instagram page, he has already received scholarship opportunities from Drexel, Albany, Siena, Yale, Penn, Penn State, and Le Moyne.
