Veretto is CAA Bound
East Catholic High School senior forward and Connecticut Basketball Club alum Matt Veretto made a verbal commitment to Delaware over the weekend.
Veretto, a late blooming 6-foot-7 southpaw forward, made a name for himself last spring and summer while playing with CBC but actually didn't earn his first division I offer until earlier this fall. When Delaware came calling in early February, it brought his recruitment to entirely new levels, and now he's headed to the Colonial Athletic Association to play his college basketball.
"Matt has an incredible work-ethic and is an unbelievable teammate," East Catholic head coach Luke Reilly said. "In his last three years he has posted a 77-6 record. He's a winner and his size and skill set make him a special talent. I'm excited to follow all his success."
Veretto was named first team All-CCC as well as first team All-State this year in the CIAC. His decorated high school career also includes a state championship in 2017 and a conference championship in 2018 among other accolades.
While Veretto's recruitment topped out at the low-major level prior to Delaware's offer, there's a number of reasons for Blue Hen fans to be optimistic about his future. First, he's a young senior with a proven work ethic who continues to evolve at a rapid rate. Second, he's well known for the quality of his character as coaches and teammates alike, from both the high school and grassroots season, all rave about his willingness to work hard, do all the little things, accept coaching, and support his teammates. Third, he owns a versatile skill set as he can take the ball off the glass to start the break and is a consistently improving floor spacer and three-point shooter.
Below are two of his most noteworthy highlights over the course of the last year.
