UMBC Adding Two Local Products
St. Thomas More’s post-graduate forward Matt Conway made a verbal commitment to UMBC last week while the school was away on their spring vacation.
Conway, a Florida native who ran with Connecticut Gold on the AAU circuit this past summer before arriving at St. Thomas More, held down the starting power forward position this year for a Chancellor team that advanced to the semi-finals of both the NEPSAC Class A Tournament as well as the National Prep Championship.
Best described as a skilled face-up four man with deceptive athleticism, Conway has a lethal mid-range jump shot with consistent range that extends out to the three-point line.
UMBC assistant coach John Zito, a native of Windsor, Connecticut, also attended St. Thomas More as a post-graduate before playing, and now coaching, for the Retrievers.
Conway won’t be the only other familiar face in UMBC’s line-up next year as Travis King will transfer to the America East school where he is expected to be eligible to play immediately after graduating from George Washington this spring.
King starred at Hyde Leadership Academy in Connecticut before doing a post-graduate year at South Kent and committing to GW. He missed his sophomore season in the Atlantic 10 as a medical redshirt and so he will have one full season of eligibility in an UMBC uniform.
