UAA Finals - New England Recap
The Under Armour Association hosted their inaugural UAA Finals last week in Atlanta.
Located only 150 miles from the EYBL Finals at the Nike Peach Jam, and other tournaments in the Augusta area, the addition of the UAA event made the southern region the major draw of the second live period.
We-R1 captured the 17u championship while the defending Super 16 champions, New Heights, took the title in the 16u division.
The New England Playaz finished 4-1 in the 17u division, scoring wins over Hoop Dreams and Grind during showcase games on Wednesday and Thursday. They dropped their opening round of pool play to the Carolina Wolves, featuring ESPN 100 swingman Tevin Mack, but finished the week with wins over the Arizona Warriors and Aim High.
Jarred Reuter continued his big summer while averaging 15.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and shooting 62% from the floor. ESPN’s Reggie Rankin recognized him on day 1 of the event for being the best low post passer in his day 1 recap while CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein compared him to former Notre Dame star Luke Harangody.
Tomas Murphy did double duty, seeing minutes with the 17u club while also headling the 16u roster. He was also recognized in ESPN’s day 1 recap as Rankin highlighted his “skill and feel.”
Mustapha Heron also had a good week, standing out for New Heights. He finished as the third leading scorer in the tournament at 19.4 points per game and also the third leading scorer for the UAA season with a total of 155 points, just one below his New Heights teammate Dupree McBrayer.
Donovan Mitchell’s breakout summer continued as well with another strong performance here. He received praise from Reggie Rankin in his Day 4 recap while also continuing to see recruitment from the likes of Louisville, Indiana, Providence, Boston College, and many others.
