Tommy Hubbard Headed D1

Tommy Hubbard’s senior season at St. Mark’s did not work out the way he envisioned.  After being forced to miss the beginning of the season due to suspension, he returned in late December just in time for the BABC Holiday Classic.  Unfortunately however, his place on the active roster didn’t last long as he would not finish the season with his team.

After that disappointing conclusion to what had otherwise been a successful high school career, Hubbard’s chances of earning the division I scholarship he had coveted for so long seemed bleak.  But then came the beginning of the spring AAU season and a second chance to prove himself to college coaches.  He joined up with Team Boston Elite, a relatively young AAU program who has quickly developed a reputation for taking some of the city’s most talented, but unheralded players, and showcasing them around the country.  Hubbard was able to make an immediate impact and help his team to a variety of impressive performances including a trip to the finals at the Bean Town Massacre as well as a third place finish at the Providence Jam Fest.  As Hubbard continued to play well and Team Boston Elite continued to win, college coaches began to take notice, including those at East Tennessee State.

“Their coaches said they liked the way I played, especially my defensive mentality,” said Hubbard.  “They told me I brought something different to the table than all their other recruits in that I’d be able to guard the other team’s best offensive player every night.”

Soon after the conclusion of the April “Live” period, Hubbard was in Tennessee taking his visit to the Buccaneers.  Very shortly after returning to Boston the 6’3 swingman gave Head Coach Murry Bartow a verbal commitment and more recently a signed National Letter of Intent.

“I never anticipated going that far away from home,” said Hubbard.  “But they had a bunch of great guys on the team and they were successful last year.  I just want to contribute to that next year.”

According to the East Tennessee State Athletics Offical Website, Coach Bartow offered the following about Hubbard after receiving his signed letter of Intent, “Tommy is just a very tough perimeter player.  He’s got a chance to come here and immediately be one of our defensive stoppers.  And even though he’s a great defender he can also score the basketball.”
