Tahlan Pettway Commits to Western Carolina
Two weeks ago, St. Thomas More and the BABC guard Tahlan Pettway announced his commitment to Western Carolina.
Pettway, a native of Worcester, has been a notable name in the New England region for some time now. He’s picked up Division One offers over the years, while contributing to winning throughout.
His first major win came in 2023 when Pettway fulfilled a lifelong dream of his up to that point, winning a Massachusetts State Championship alongside some of his best friends such as Amir Jenkins, Ty Tabales, Teshaun Steele, Joe Okla and Khari Bryan.
From there, Pettway spent a year at the Macduffie School following in the footsteps of his older brother Tanahj.
Tanahj capped off a remarkable season this year at Prairie View A&M, leading the team in scoring at 17 points per game.
Following one season at Macduffie, the WCU commit decided to go down a different path, transferring to local powerhouse, St. Thomas More.
While originally intending to play two seasons with the Chancellors of STM, Pettway departed a year early, but his mark was certainly left.
As March began, the Chancellors had seen their NEPSAC playoff hopes come to a close in a thriller with the New Hampton School, but there was still something left to play for; the National Prep Championship.
Coming in with optimism amidst Chancellors’ Head Coach Jere Quinn’s 47th season leading the program, Pettway was a vital factor to a memorable run.
The Chancellors were able to put together three huge wins over the likes of Link Year Prep, the Newman School, and Cushing Academy en route to an appearance in the National Prep Championship game.
Despite suffering a loss in the contest, the game was as memorable as they come, and Pettway was a big part of that.
The incoming Western Carolina Catamount averaged over 11 points per game in the tournament, and a stellar line of 9 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the finale.
Following the season, Pettway suited up for everlasting figure in the region in Leo Papile, playing on the 3SSB circuit for the BABC.
Throughout the course of the year, Pettway helped the BABC off to a 34 game winning streak to start the season.
Alongside Amir Jenkins, Abdou Toure, Alex Egbuonu, and more, the BABC went on a run in the 3SSB tournament, ultimately losing to D1 Minnesota in the quarterfinals.
Now moving onto Western Carolina, Pettway brings an experienced, battle-tested game to the floor right away.
His skilled shotmaking off the dribble will surely translate to the next level, and it will be interesting to see where his game takes him as he enters this new chapter.
