Steve Zazuri Follows in Father’s Footsteps to Sacred Heart

At this time next year Steve Zazuri Jr. will be preparing for his freshman year at Sacred Heart University…and he will have big shoes to fill.  His father, Steve Zazuri Sr, is not only a former Pioneer himself but also the school’s all time assist leader.

“I’ve wanted to go there since I knew my dad went there,” said the younger Zazuri.  “I’m really excited.  When it was finally done my whole family was really happy.”

The Sacred Heart coaching staff had been keeping close tabs on Zazuri throughout the July live period when he played at session II of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp and then with his Future Stars AAU team at the National Invitational Tournament.  And it appears as though they were impressed as the point guard was on campus for an unofficial visit less than a week after the conclusion of the live period.

“Coach Bike talked a lot about the importance of working hard and taking care of my academics.  Then he offered me a scholarship and told me to go home and think it over,” said Zazuri.  “I called him the next day and told him Sacred Heart was where I wanted to be.”

Zazuri will bring a different dimension to the Pioneers backcourt as he is one of the most physically powerful and tough point guards you will find.  He has also earned the reputation of being an extremely hard worker who may be best described as a self made player.  While other guards may be a littler quicker or more naturally athletic, Zazuri has clearly spent long hours in both the gym and the weight room preparing for this opportunity.  Now when he steps onto the court not only is he a fierce competitor, but he is a player who has a versatile skill set at his disposal as he can knock down shots from the perimeter, get into the lane off the dribble, and create shots for his teammates equally well.

The bottom line is he is a hard working player and fierce competitor who will be a valuable addition to Sacred Heart during games, practices, and in the locker room.
