St. Rose Lands a New England Steal
Marianapolis Prep post-graduate and New Mission High School alum Kachi Nzerem has committed to the College of St. Rose, a division II school in the Northeast 10 Conference.
The news was confirmed by both Marianapolis Prep head coach Andrew Vitale and New Mission head coach Cory McCarthy.
Nzerem had a storied high school career, leading New Mission to back-to-back MIAA state championships in his junior and senior seasons and earning numerous post-season accolades following a senior year in which he averaged over 17 points and 6 rebounds per game.
He came up the AAU ranks playing with the Boston Warriors before spending his post-graduate season running with Metro Boston and had similar success at Marianapolis, averaging nearly 15 points per game while shooting 43% from the three-point line.
“We are really happy that Kachi has found a school where he will be able to have a lot of success right away,” Vitale told the New England Recruiting Report. “He has been a great kid for our basketball program and for the Marianapolis community. St. Rose is getting a great basketball player but an even better person.”
Nzerem saw wide-ranging recruitment from a variety of scholarship levels but ultimately settled on the program which recruited him the hardest.
"I thought they were a good fit from day one when they called about him," McCarthy told ESPN Boston. "They wanted him the most and he appreciated that. When it comes this time of year, you go where you're wanted most. He felt like they recruited him the hardest. They wanted him from the jump."
Nzerem is a highly athletic six-foot-six forward with a prototypical basketball body and good shot-making ability from the perimeter. His versatility also promises to be a major asset in the NE-10 as his combination of physical tools and basketball skill gives him the potential to play three different positions in that league.
