Sherwood Flying into America East

It was little more than one year ago that Chris Sherwood first began to make a name for himself among college coaches.  An explosively athletic swingman, it was hard for Sherwood to go unnoticed with his high flying aerial assault.  But while a wide variety of explosive dunks where enough to draw coaches’ attention, the consensus at the time was that while he was athletically gifted, he still had a lot of work to do as a basketball player.

Fast forward to this summer and Sherwood was a different player.  Once again running with Expressions Elite on the grassroots circuit, the Brimmer and May swingman had tightened his handle, improved his Achilles heel jumper, and learned to utilize his physical gifts to create his own shot, not just in transition but also in the half court.

“No player I have coached has improved more in a twelve month period,” said Brimmer & May head coach Greg Kristof.

Such an improvement didn’t go unnoticed by college coaches as Sherwood scored seven division I scholarship offers this summer with his suitors ranging from the NEC to the America East, MAAC, and Atlantic 10.

Ultimately though, Sherwood’s decision making process came to a quick conclusion as he found everything he was looking for at the University of New Hampshire and made a verbal commitment to Wildcats head coach Bill Herrion on Thursday.

“I’m really excited about UNH,” Sherwood said.  “I think I’ve found the perfect fit.  I really feel comfortable with Coach Herrion and the rest of the coaching staff.”

“I’m very happy that Chris made his decision by weighing all the factors,” said Kristof.  “He took into account not only the athletics but also the academic and social situation that fit him best at the college level.”

By spurning leagues like the Atlantic 10, Sherwood gives New Hampshire a very effective two way player whose best basketball is still in front of him.  Beyond his physical tools and improved skill set, Sherwood is also a terrific perimeter defender and a still rapidly developing scorer on the offensive end.

He becomes the first player to join UNH’s 2011 recruiting class.
