Scherler Commits to NJIT

Sources tell NERR that Vermont Academy big man Zack Scherler has committed to the staff at NJIT.
Scherler, a 6’11” center from Michigan, wrapped up an impressive high school career this past March with a run to the Final Four at the National Prep Championship.
Throughout the season, the NJIT commit made his mark as a rebounder who could control the glass. He recorded seven games with 10 or more rebounds and consistently contributed on the offensive boards with a gritty, physical approach.
On the offensive end, Scherler shot 51% from the field for the season. He’s a patient post presence with a soft touch around the rim and the ability to finish with either hand. He also showed the ability to space the floor as an open shooter off the catch.
Scherler spent two seasons at Vermont Academy and experienced his share of ups and downs, but he stayed focused and worked hard—ultimately seeing those efforts pay off.
“Zack is one of our best development stories during our time here at VA. His first season he played 78 minutes and scored five baskets on a really good team,” said Vermont Academy Head Coach John Zall, referring to Scherler’s first season when the team won the NEPSAC AAA Championship.
While Scherler made major physical strides, he also credited a shift in mentality for his improvement: “I put in a lot of work in Vermont to get here, but I feel like the biggest change—especially compared to last season—has been an improved mentality.”
“Zack’s dedication to the weight room and his body made him an impact player. He started every game for us and was our best defender all season by our internal metrics,” Zall added.
The Michigan native was also the recipient of the inaugural “Chike Ndefo” award, given to the player with the best plus/minus defensive metrics on the team. Ndefo, now at Towson, was known as one of the top defenders in his class before matriculating.
In the National Prep Championship Final Four run, Scherler faced some elite competition. In one key matchup, he went head-to-head with George Mason signee Emmanuel Kanga and 7’1” top-150 center Favour Ibe.
Scherler ended up being the difference-maker in the contest. “Zack saved his best for last, against Mt. Zion in the National Prep Championships. Against a HM frontline, Zack had 12 points, 16 rebounds (8 offensive), propelling us to victory,” Zall said.
Now joining NJIT, the Highlanders are adding a true post presence to a squad looking to turn things around this season.
Scherler spoke highly of the NJIT staff: “What stood out to me was the coaching staff at NJIT. They have a clear vision of who I can become over the next four years. I was very impressed by the organization within the staff, and it gave me confidence in their program.”
“Playing for Grant Billmeier at NJIT is a great match,” Zall concluded. “As a former big man, Coach Billmeier has a track record of developing forwards, and we can’t wait to follow Zack’s career.”
