Sanders Makes Commitment Following Visit
Nyheem Sanders spent the weekend in Waterbury, Connecticut on the campus of Post University, a rising division II program in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
Sanders must have liked what he saw and heard, as he accepted the school’s scholarship offer and made a verbal commitment to head coach Mike Donnelly on Tuesday night.
Eagles assistant coach Luke Murray, who formerly coached Sanders with the New England Playaz, played a crucial role in landing the talented swingman.
“Luke did a great job of recruiting Nyheem,” said St. Andrew’s head coach Mike Hart. “I’m very happy for both of them because I think this is a great fit academically and athletically.”
Sanders has had a resurgence of sorts in his senior year. Averaging over 13 points per game, the Rhode Island native has been playing some of the best basketball of his career as of late.
“He’s had a nice senior year,” said Hart. “In what has been a very inconsistent year for us as a team, he has been one of our most consistent players.”
He’s also shown the ability to step up in big games as he recently scored 17 at the Hoophall Classic, 19 in another game against Worcester Academy, and 22 at the BABC Prep Classic against Tilton.
“He’s made the plays when we needed them and he’s defended well,” said Hart, “and I think his best basketball is still ahead of him.”
Indeed, Sanders has all the talent to make an immediate impact at Post. He’s always been capable of attacking effectively with his dribble drive game, but has become a much more versatile offensive player as of late with the development of his three-point shot. Defensively, he’s a guy who can guard all three perimeter spots because of his size, strength, and quickness.
He’ll provide an obvious burst of talent to a Post team that is already playing strong basketball. They currently sit in second place in the CACC with a conference record of 7-4 and overall mark of 13-8, and just knocked off the conference’s 1st place team Bloomfield.
