Ryan Roach may not have had a big name going into the summer, but by the time the month of July had come to an end plenty of coaches at both the division II and III levels were convinced of his game.
The five-foot-eleven Cardinal Spellman (MA) point guard made a verbal commitment to Stonehill on Thursday, accepting a scholarship offer from the division II school.
Roach had been flying low under the radar, opting to play alongside many of his high school teammates on a South Shore Wolfpack AAU team that was coached by his father, but played his way into a steady dose of interest from several Northeast-10 Conference schools this summer.
Roach was named to the BasketBull Summer Championship All-Tournament team during the first week of the month and followed that up by leading South Shore Wolfpack to the finals of the Hall of Fame National Invitational a week later.
While he won’t wow you at first with his athleticism or even his three-point shooting, Roach is a pure point guard who understands what it means to run a team and has a way of making his teammates better. He’s a terrific passer, both in transition as well as in half-court situations, and comes full of intangibles including a strong work-ethic and high basketball I.Q.
He joins Hampden Academy (ME) swingman Isaiah Bess to become the second player to commit to first year Stonehill head coach Chris Kraus.
