Reebok All-American Camp – Event Recap

Mike Marra:  NEPSAC fans will not be surprised to hear that Marra was particularly impressive with his three-point shooting and athleticism on Monday.  In one scrimmage he connected from behind the arc on 8 different occasions while also throwing down 3 dunks.  While this has become a bit of a norm for Marra, it is quite impressive that he is able to be just as efficient against some of the nation’s best.

Givon Crump:  At first glance Crump appears to be one of the better prospects in camp at the wing position.  He was draining shots from all over the court with his picture perfect mechanics and also getting after it on the defensive end of the floor by utilizing his long arms to his advantage.

Thomas Knight:  It was an up and down day for Knight that began in very impressive fashion.  Early on he was matched up against one of the best big men in the country in Renardo Sidney.  Sidney nailed Knight early in the scrimmage with a couple of cheap shots, although that seemed to only light a fire under the Maine native.  Knight more than held his own for the rest of the match-up as he showed his impressive skill set on the offensive end, played tough in the paint, and blocked shots coming from the weak-side of the floor.  Unfortunately, that match-up seemed to take a lot out of Knight as he appeared to tire and was not as effective later in the day.

Kyle Casey:  Casey began the day of scrimmages on his team’s second unit, although he may play his way into the starting five if he continues to produce like he did today.  The Brimmer & May forward played a well rounded floor game as he scored when the opportunity presented itself, rebounded on both sides, blocked shots, and made a variety of clever interior passes.

Darryl Cato-Bishop:  Bishop was another player who was up and down on Monday.  Playing on the wing, Bishop’s powerful body prevented a major mismatch problem, one that sometimes gave him a big advantage and other times presented him with some challenges.  On the plus side, he was able to take smaller guards into the post and go to work throughout the day.  But on the down side, he also seemed to tire as the day went on and he was forced to try and keep up with the smaller and quicker perimeter players.

Matt Brown & Denzel Brito:  The two underclassmen faced similar challenges today as they were both asked to run their teams from the point guard position.  This was certainly a more daunting task for Brown, as he plays predominantly off the ball.  But to his credit he was up to the task and didn’t attempt to do too much with the ball, instead advancing it up the floor with the pass as often as possible.  Running the team was no problem for Brito as he distributed well.  In fact, he may have even been a little too unselfish.  He was shooting the ball beautifully from the perimeter (connecting on 3 of 4 three-point attempts in the afternoon scrimmage) and could have likely put more points on the board had he been more assertive looking for his own shot.
