Quasim Pugh Makes Selection
When Quasim Pugh arrived in New England more then two years ago he came with a lot of hype. Like many other New York products he was known as a wizard with the ball, someone who could break his man down off the dribble and get to the rim.
After two up and down seasons at Worcester Academy, Pugh made the decision to transfer to St. Thomas More for his senior season. When we watched the Chancellors’ open gym last month we were impressed with Pugh’s maturation on the floor. Not only was he knocking down more shots from the perimeter then in years past, but he also appeared to be flourishing in a more supportive role. No longer was he required to create offense for himself and his teammates, as now that role was being played by Devin Ebanks. Instead Pugh was impressing by hitting the open man, feeding the post, and playing good on-the-ball defense.
Pugh also appears to have matured with regard to his college decision making process. Having once been concerned primarily with the highest level possible, it now appears that Pugh simply picked the best fit. In the College of Charleston he goes to a quality mid-major program led by a head coach who has a long history of success with New York City point guards. Of course the most notable of these point guards was Stephon Marbury who starred for Cremins at Georgia Tech.
Now Cremins will have the opportunity to mold another NYC lead guard. Clearly Pugh’s abilities off the bounce will always be his biggest attribute, but if he continues to learn the nuances of the game then he has a chance to be a very pivotal role in the rebirth of the Charleston program.
