Prep Star Commits to Indiana
Tom Crean may have only recently arrived at Indiana, but he has been recruiting Maurice Creek for a long time. This weekend his hard work paid off as he landed a commitment from South Kent’s star shooting guard.
“He recruited me at Marquette and when he went to Indiana they kept recruiting me,” said Creek. “Indiana has got one of the best basketball traditions in the nation. It is a great situation for me.”
The D.C. native felt comfortable committing to the Hoosiers despite the fact that he has not yet visited their campus, although that is scheduled to take place next weekend.
While Creek had scholarship offers from a wide variety of schools including Marquette, Maryland, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Texas, the University of Miami was considered the other finalist for his services.
Creek, who starred at Oxon Hill High School in Maryland before arriving at South Kent last fall, still has one more season to play at the Connecticut prep school before heading off to the Big Ten. His role’s aren’t likely to be too different as he will be expected to put points on the board both during his final prep school season as well as his freshman season of college. He averaged almost 22 points per game last year for South Kent along with four rebounds and five assists.
Known primarily as a shooter, Creek is a silky smooth offensive player who can catch fire from behind the three-point line and also score off the dribble in the mid-range area. While he has improved his game at the defensive end of the floor while also adding more muscle to his frame, those are two areas he will need to continue to target during his final season at South Kent.
Creek, who is a consensus top 100 player in the country by both the scout and rivals networks, becomes the third player in the class of 2009 to commit to the Hosiers, joining big men Derek Elston and Bobby Capobianco.
