Prep Profiles 2022-23 Season: Springfield Commonwealth Academy
Longtime coach Joan Sanchez is now leading the program at Springfield Commonwealth Academy. They have a diverse roster, with multiple players from outside the United States.
3 Things You Need to Know About This Year’s Team
1. Aranguren provides a steady presence
Jean Aranguren made the move to SCA after playing for Coach Sanchez last year at Upper Room Christian School. He is a player who you know what you will get game in and game out. The 2023 guard hits treys when spotting up, moves the ball, and has strength/length to impact a game defensively.
2. Reyes is one to watch in New England’s 2025 class
Anthony Reyes also transferred to SCA from Upper Room. The guard’s IQ as a half-court passer, proficiency from long-range, and foot speed to pick up 94 feet have him on our radar early. It will be interesting to track his development in the coming years.
3. Joseph contributes at both ends
2023 forward Seth Joseph gives this squad value on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The 6’6 forward can make open standstill three-pointers or block opponents’ shots from the weak side. If Joseph’s half-court passing flashes turn into regular occurrences that would only add more value.
3 Questions Heading into the Season
1. Can Wahdan be a regular producer?
Zein Wahdan is an intriguing prospect. The 2023 prospect has 6’9 size, good footwork scoring on the block, and soft hands pulling down defensive rebounds. Despite these attributes, his overall performance has been up and down. If Wahdan can become a consistent performer, his team and overall recruitment will benefit.
2. Will Flores and Pridgen relish their roles all season long?
For a team to have success, not everyone can be a primary scorer. 2023 prospects Jorjan Flores and Quentin Pridgen fill some of these other roles. Flores contributes as an off-ball cutter and charge drawer. Pridgen makes his mark hounding opponents as an on-ball defender and jumping into passing lanes for steals. Throughout a long season, it can be tough at times to always be happy with these roles. How Flores and Pridgen react in the coming months will be something to watch.
3. Could Madding end up being a regular rotation player at some point?
A recent addition for the Tornadoes was 2026 forward Kuany Madding. His 6'7 size, fluidity, and floor spacing glimpses create optimism long term. Madding's thin frame may mean this season is more of a developmental year adjusting to the physicality. If his tools could translate early though, that would make this squad more difficult to prepare for.
