Penn Lands Another NE Native
The University of Pennsylvania, better known as UPenn, landed an electric facilitator and gritty scorer in Chase Geremia.
The 6’2” guard chose UPenn over other notable offers including Cornell, Brown, Fairfield, and Hofstra. After a consistent summer riding with BABC’s 2026 squad, Chase found his collegiate landing spot on August 7, 2025.
Geremia spent his first two years of high school at Daniel Hand High School and garnered attention especially after his 2022 CIAC State Championship.
Chase became a member of the Newman School in the summer of 2023, a part of “Basketball Architect” John Carroll and Head Coach Jackson Johnson’s second recruiting class, coming in as a reclassified sophomore.
The former legendary NMH head coach, John Carroll, brought in one of his former NMH assistant coaches Jackson Johnson to grab the helm as head coach at Newman in the summer of 2022. Nothing short of spectacular describes Johnson’s tenure at Newman thus far.
Coach Johnson commented Chase does things well; there is not much that jumps out about his workout, but his focus on game-speed reps and drive to improve his body, especially physical stature has transformed his defense, especially. Geremia’s last two, going on three years at Newman helped elevate the program, as the sharpshooting playmaker cemented himself as a vital aspect of the 2025 NEPSAC AAA championship, the first ever in school history.
The three words to describe Chase as a player: “shooter, steady, crafty,” said HC Johnson of the Newman School. Chase’s “ability to be more physical” has steadily improved his under-the-radar defense, in addition to understanding the “difference between…being anticipatory versus reactionary” aiding in Geremia’s quick first step locking down offensive players. “He’s become very good at ‘right-place-right-time’ and developing those habits to allow his instincts to unfold naturally.”
Part of Chase Geremia’s decision to join UPenn confided in the sheer volume of three point shots per game the Quakers shoot. “McCaffrey is coming from the University of Iowa, where they were extremely offensive focused…known for three point shooting” said Johnson. Former UPenn head coach Steve Donahue became known for his team’s remarkable three point shooting.
McCaffery, former HC of Iowa, became the main target of the UPenn job because of his previous experience, where the Hawkeyes scored 82.5 points per game as a team, which for the 2024 season ranked them 13th in the nation (Team Rankings). “It’s a great stylistic fit,” said Coach Johnson of Newman.
“Chase has improved his attention to detail during his workouts. He is imagining what the shot feels like in a game and he practices it that way with great precision” said Johnson.
The Newman head coach emphasized that Chase’s workouts are game speed, but especially tailored towards the pace he plays during those games, clearly an excellent mix of sprinting into shots while also working on change of pace. “He continues to eliminate inefficiencies,” in other words–Chase Geremia is ready and has one more year of prep school hoops in his future.
