Okorie Chooses Harvard

This morning, it was announced that Brewster Academy & BABC point guard Ebuka Okorie has committed to Harvard University of the Ivy League.

Okorie has been a standout in New England for a long time, having played significant minutes as a freshman at Cushing Academy. He picked up his first offer from Samford before ever playing a high school game, and has since continued to build his stock.

During his time at Cushing, Okorie played three seasons filled with memorable moments. His sophomore season was especially notable, as he helped lead Cushing to the NEPSAC-AA championship game, where they ultimately fell just short, losing by two points. Shortly afterward, Cushing upset one of the favorites for the title in the National Prep Championship, Hargrave Military Academy.

In the spring Okorie announced he would be playing his senior season in the Nike EYBL Scholastic League with one of New England’s most renowned programs, Brewster Academy.

This grassroots season was a standout one for Okorie, a point guard of Nigerian descent, as he put together an impressive campaign.

In almost 31 minutes per game, Okorie averaged 12.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 46.7% from the field and 40.7% from three-point range. He played in all 20 games for BABC in the 3SSB this season, captaining them to a 14-6 record.

Entering the spring with offers from Samford, Bryant, Albany and Fairfield in his bag, his recruitment spiked as his play took off. By mid-July, Brown, George Washington, Harvard, Northeastern and Rice had extended scholarship offers his way.

Harvard is getting a talented point guard with extensive high-level playing experience. Okorie has spent multiple seasons in the 3SSB, played in one of the top conferences in the NEPSAC, and will now get a year of experience in a top high school league in America before he graduates.

His skillset is that of a complete lead guard with a high feel for the game, decision-making as a traffic director, and the ability to get a bucket. He has a quick first step on drives and has made strides as a shooter as shown in his 3SSB shooting percentages. Competitive defense is also another strong attribute he brings to the table.

After completing his upcoming senior season, Okorie will take his talents to Cambridge Massachusetts, to play for Harvard University’s Tommy Amaker. Coach Amaker has a 292-179 record at Harvard, leading the program in career victories, with four NCAA tournament appearances and seven Ivy League Regular Season titles.
