Northeastern Picks Up Commitment
As was first reported by Alex Schwartz of the Northstar Basketball Blog, Northeastern University picked up a verbal commitment from six-foot-seven forward Alex Bates earlier this week.
After an impressive month of July on the camp circuit, Bates ended up with over 10 division I scholarship offers. Ultimately, Bates told Schwartz that Northeastern stood out among the pack because of the competitiveness of the CAA, the quality of the school’s academics, and the family like atmosphere with head coach Bill Coen and the rest of the team.
Bates attends Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland and runs with D.C. Assault on the AAU circuit.
Described as a long and lefty athlete with a high motor on both ends of the floor, Bates could be the latest in a long line diamond in the rough type prospects discovered by Coen. It is a pattern that began during his days as an assistant at Boston College with the likes of current NBA players Craig Smith and Jared Dudley and has continued at Northeastern with all CAA performer Matt Janning.
