NEPSAC AAA Losing Two Schools

Just two years after the New England Prep School Athletic Council went through a momentous realignment, there are more changes coming to the nation’s premier post-graduate basketball league.

Two of the eight programs that made up the NEPSAC’s highest division, Class AAA, will be leaving the group immediately next year as both the Winchendon School and Maine Central Institute have adopted new philosophies with regard to prep school basketball.

The Winchendon School is attempting to reposition their varsity basketball program to class C, based on their enrollment, while it remains unclear whether MCI will still compete in the NEPSAC or strictly in the local Maine high school ranks.

Either way, only six programs will remain in class AAA next year – Brewster Academy, Bridgton Academy, New Hampton School, Northfield Mount Hermon School, South Kent School, and St. Thomas More School.

MCI and Winchendon join Phillips Exeter Academy and Worcester Academy, who were previously part of the NEPSAC’s premier basketball league through the 2009-2010 season (then called class A), but “reclassified” during the realignment that took place prior to the 2010-2011 season.  Worcester Academy now plays in class AA while Phillips Exeter now plays in class A.
