Myers-Kiett Completes His Comeback Story

Twenty-one months ago Mike Myers-Keitt was in a good place.  He had just finished his junior season at Fairfield Prep (Fairfield, Connecticut) and was playing the best basketball of his life just as his recruiting interest was picking up.  Then everything came to a screeching halt after he suffered a head injury at the Providence College Team Camp.

The blow to his head had caused him significant damage.  He was no longer fighting for a basketball scholarship, now he was fighting to get back the functions to live his everyday life.

“I had to learn to do everything all over again,” Myers-Keitt told the New England Recruiting Report.  “Walking, talking, everything that people take for granted I had to learn again.”

So while most players in his position where about to begin the crucial July live period prior to their senior year, he was getting ready to begin his rehab.

While he progressed quickly enough to get back on the court for his senior season, he was far from the same player he had been before the fall.

“It threw everything off…my vision, my balance, my strength.” Myers-Keitt said “It wasn’t until I got to Marianapolis [fall of 2007] that I started to feel like myself again.”

For those who saw Myers-Keitt play last year at Fairfield Prep and this year at Marianapolis, the differences were undeniable.  Now, he has returned to the high flying athlete who runs the floor like a deer, jumps out of the gym, and can dunk on people.

“He has improved with and without the ball in his hands and he’s as explosive as any player in New England,” said Marianapolis Prep Head Coach Dave Vitale.  “But his best days are still ahead of him, because as his body matures his game will follow.”

Myers-Keitt knew that he had come full circle when Monmouth began to recruit him this year.  The Hawks were one of the first programs who had contacted him during his junior year, and the swingman was actually scheduled to visit their campus unofficially the day after his unfortunate accident.

It wasn’t until Thursday of last week when he finally reached the New Jersey campus, this time for an official visit.  After two days of meeting with coaches, players, and professors from the school’s business program, Myers-Keitt had seen all he needed to see.

He returned home to finalize his plans with his mother and his coach before calling Monmouth Head Coach Dave Calloway to offer his verbal commitment.
