Monteiro Gets First High Major Offer
There are a couple of things that make B.J. Monteiro special. First and foremost is his talent on the basketball floor. The 6’5 shooting guard is a natural scorer who can beat his defender in a variety of ways. When he has his game going you can see the full repertoire of moves including spins, step backs, pull-ups, three-pointers, and dunks.
But what really sets B.J. Monteiro apart from his competition is his demeanor on and off the court. To his credit he doesn’t have the “big time” ego, despite having the big time game. Instead what you get is a quiet confidence. He knows he has a lot of ability, and he doesn’t need to tell you about it because his game will do all the talking for him.
When you put it all together that makes for one special talent, which is probably why Penn State Head Coach Ed DeChellis felt it was necessary to extend a scholarship offer when B.J. was on campus for an unofficial visit earlier this week.
“I really liked the school,” Monteiro said. “It was like nothing I had ever seen before on the east coast.”
“Coach DeChellis took me around the whole trip,” he said. “He’s trying to do big things there and he wants me to be a part of it.
Monteiro indicated the biggest factor in his decision making process would be the best fit to his style of play.
“I think I’m at my best on a team who gets up and down the floor,” he said. “Coach said that’s the way they want to play they just didn’t have the personnel for it this year.”
With his second scholarship offer in hand (Fordham was the first to offer in the fall), Monteiro will also take unofficial visits to Seton Hall and St. Joseph’s before starring with the Connecticut Phenom Elite AAU program again this July.
