Mobley Picks Up D1 Offer
Following a standout senior season at Worcester’s St. Peter-Marian High School in which he averaged 23 points per game and scored a selection on the ESPN Boston All-State team, Matt Mobley made the decision to attend prep school at hometown Worcester Academy.
Making the move in search of a scholarship, Mobley picked up his first Division 1 offer on Wednesday night from Central Connecticut State University.
“At the end of the year I wasn’t really getting recruited much. College is expensive, and I felt like I was a scholarship level player. I thought going to Worcester Academy for a year would help me get a scholarship,” Mobley said in an interview following his first offer.
CCSU notified Worcester Academy head coach Jamie Sullivan of the offer on Wednesday, following a voicemail on Mobley’s phone in which they informed him of the offer and their excitement to have him visit. He’ll visit CCSU on Thursday.
Matt attributes some of the attention he has received from Division 1 programs to his playing for the Bay State Flash this July.
“Playing for the Flash went well, it was fun. We went something like 15-2 in July. I played really well with them, they helped me get noticed,” he said.
Being a big moment for Matt and the program, Flash directors B.J. Dunne and Dave Lyth tweeted: “Historical day for the 1st year Flash program as Matt Mobley becomes the 1st player to receive a D1 scholarship. He deserves it!”
Worcester’s gyms were often packed this past winter to see the electric 6’2 guard, as only a handful of Division 1 talents have come from the area in the past decade. Mobley says he was taken aback by all the congratulatory praises he received following his first offer.
“Aw man, it was great, I didn’t expect it to be like that,” he said, at a loss for words, “it felt good, I just loved it.”
Several scholarship level programs have reached out to Mobley this summer, including Long Island, UNH, Loyola Marymount, Northern Kentucky, UMass-Lowell, Assumption, and St. Anselm’s. Patriot League foes Holy Cross and Bucknell also contacted Sullivan. Matt says he will be visiting Long Island and Assumption this August.
