Middlesex Magic Announce 3 More 2016 Commitments

The Middlesex Magic AAU program announced three more commitments from their 2016 class earlier this week with Phillips Andover's Sam Jefferson heading to Colby College, Loomis Chaffee's Frank Oftring committing to Babson College and Worcester Academy alum heading to Bates College.

Jefferson is a high level shot-maker who had a big season at Andover. With good size at six-foot-five, excellent footwork and a quick release he doesn't need much seperation to get his shot off and is also a strong positional rebounder and defender. Phillips Academy head coach Terrell Ivory even went so far as to call Jefferon his team's best player for the better part of the season in a recent story with ESPN Boston.

"I believe he will be an instant offensive weapon for Coach Strahorn at Colby," Magic director Michael Crotty Jr. said, "and have a chance to make an immediate impact with such a large graduating class."

Oftring heads to Babson after being an important part of Rock Battistoni's rotation at Loomis Chaffee this year. He's a versatile scorer who can put points on the board both inside the paint and beyond the arc.

"Frank will be joining a Babson team that returns the bulk of it's core from the last two seasons, and I think he will be able to help this team in their pursuit of a Final Four run and beyond," Crotty said.

Finally Spellman, who graduated from Beaver Country Day School and did a post-graduate year at Worcester Academy, is heading to Bates after a gap year. A known talent in the backcourt who mixes shot-making and athleticism with now equally dangerous playmaking ability, Spellman has a chance to be a major weapon in the NESCAC.

"Jeff is a dynamic combo-guard guard who has the ability to score at three levels. He possesses tremendous athleticism and his explosive first step should make him very difficult for opposing defenders for the next four years," Crotty said. "I truly believe that Coach Furbush has a player who has the ability to make a lasting impact on the Bates program!"

The Magic program has now sent a total of 15 players on to play college basketball in their 2016 class including seven to schools in the NEPSAC along with others to similarly prestigious academic programs like Emory, Washington & Lee, Cal Tech and John Hopkins among others.
