Mayo Makes Pick

Notre Dame Prep guard Todd Mayo made a verbal commitment to Marquette head coach Buzz Williams on Friday afternoon. 

Mayo visited Marquette's campus two weeks ago and was on hand to see the Golden Eagles score a 24 victory over Providence. 

Providence was one of several high-major schools who were actively recruiting Mayo including Baylor, Memphis, Oklahoma State, and others. 

Another suitor came into the picture this week as Mayo's hometown favorite West Virginia delayed his planned commitment with an 11th hour offer on Thursday.  Mayo spent the next 24 hours mulling the decision over before calling Williams on Friday afternoon. 

"I've had a long year here at Notre Dame Prep, and while some schools are picking up interest now, Marquette has been loyal to me the entire time," Mayo said.  "Their entire staff has seen me play and they all feel like I'm a great fit in the Marquette family.  I also had an especially close relationship with Coach Williams and Coach [Aki] Collins." 

Notre Dame Prep head coach Ryan Hurd concurred. 

"I think Marquette is being rewarded for their patience," he said.  "They identified Todd early on, stuck with him when he hit a little rut in the middle of the year, and now that he's back on top of his game, they're being rewarded."

Mayo was one of the highest rated available guards in the country and showed why this week as he put up a total of 83 points during three games at the National Prep Showcase. 

Mayo joins another New England prep product, Hotchkiss' Derrick Wilson, in Marquette's 2011 recruiting class.
