Loer Stays in Rhode Island

Yesterday it was announced that St. George’s and Middlesex Magic 2025 guard Barrett Loer would be taking his talents to URI following his senior year.

Loer is a native of Millis Massachusetts, but has spent his entire high school career under St. George’s Head Coach Dwayne Pina, and now, he’s moving just 30 minutes away to URI.

His high school career has been one to remember as the big 6’5 guard caught attention early on, and continued to build on it year over year.

In his freshman year, in the midst of the pandemic, he was named to the Frosh/Soph Elite 75 list, our annual list of underclassmen to know in the region.

While the showcase was held virtually, he had performed in front of our scouts in various forms leading up to it, and ultimately was deserving of the honor.

Although coaches had been well aware of his game for some time, he picked up his first offer from Holy Cross in April of 2023, but after a huge performance in the UAA with the Middlesex Magic, his recruitment really picked up.

“Coaching Barrett the last few years has been an absolute joy on and off the court and a leader vocally,” said Mike Crotty, Loer’s Middlesex Magic coach.

“He’s one of the most athletic and skilled wings that we’ve had.. I think he has a chance to make a really big impact [at URI],” Crotty concluded.

From June to September of 2023, Albany, Bryant, Siena, URI and Minnesota had all extended offers to the guard.

Heading into his junior season, Loer knew and embraced that he was going to be a top option for the Dragons, and lived up to that bill.

He had a number of 20+ point outings, but continued to elevate other aspects of his game, effectively leading his teammates on the floor, bringing contagious energy, crashing the boards, and creating for his teammates.

Just one month into the season, Wake Forest, Penn State and Xavier had entered the mix in his recruitment as each school extended him an offer.

Since the turning point of 2023 into 2024, Loer has struggled with a lower leg injury, but has taken a smart approach to his recovery, ensuring a smooth return to the court.

In talks with the URI commit, he had this to say about his decision: “I feel super comfortable with the staff. It's close to where I go to school right now, and you know I've had injuries throughout this past year. [URI’s] been really solid, kept it super consistent and always sort of had a vision for me,” he said mentioning some of the factors that led to his commitment.

He went on to say, “It was a spot where we thought I’d have a great opportunity to play for a staff that has believed in me and will give me a chance from the beginning.”

Loer concluded with, “I’m super excited for what’s to come, Go Rams!”

Things are looking up for the future ram, and a big conclusion to his high school career is on its way.
