LIU Gets a Good One in Hicks

New England Recruiting Report | Saturday, October 1st, 2016

Commonwealth Academy guard Shyheim Hicks made a verbal commitment to Long Island University on Saturday, providing head coach Jack Perri with a scorer and three-point shooter who should be capable of making an immediate impact in the Northeast Conference.

Hicks had a big reputation at a young age but has really taken his game to new levels within the last twelve months.

His junior year at Commonwealth was nothing short of sensational as he scored the 1000th point in his career in January, had a number of huge games where he caught fire from behind the three-point line and became the all-time leading scorer in program history.

He joined the New England Playaz this spring and while he may not have scored the ball in quite the same volume as he did during the high school season, he was no less impressive as he was able to demonstrate an ability to thrive in a much different style of play.

His production both during the prep school season as well as on the Adidas Guantlet earned him a plethora of mid-major offers from programs in conferences including the Atlantic 10, MAAC and MAC among others.

Hicks is a well-built two-guard with a strong body and good athleticism. He can make shots in bunches from behind the three-point line but is also a good defender and open floor playmaker.

He becomes the 5th member of the New England Playaz class of 2017 to commit to a scholarshi  level school as he joins Kellan Grady (Davidson), Tomas Murphy (Northeastern), Jerome Desrosiers (Princeton) and Jordan Mello-Klein (Northeastern).

Below are highlights both from the game in which he eclipses the 1,000 point plateau last January as well as with the Playaz during this summer's July evaluation period.
