Langston Headlines Southerns Class
Newly appointed head coach Mike Donnelly recently wrapped up his first recruiting class at the helm of the Owls’ program and came away with a big addition late in the summer.
Greg Langston, who had played a full summer AAU season in preparation for his anticipated post-graduate year, ultimately decided to spurn prep school and instead accept a scholarship offer from his nearby state school.
Following a storied career at St. Joseph’s High School in Trumbull, Connecticut, Langston opted to head to prep school and in so doing opened up another year of eligibility on the AAU circuit, where he ran with the Connecticut Basketball Club.
His performance during the recent AAU season was nothing short of spectacular as Langston silenced his critics and proved to be indispensible for a CBC team that wound up advancing to the Final Four of AAU Nationals.
Known for his scoring ability throughout his high school career, Langston showed his total game, proving his ability to rebound over bigger players inside, facilitate offense with his passing ability, and serve as a defensive spark plug with his ability to take charges from the weak-side of the floor.
At Southern, he projects as a player who should be able to make an immediate impact and go on to have as good of a four year career as he wants.
While Langston no doubt headlines the Southern class, he certainly isn’t alone.
Also joining Donnelly’s first recruiting class are two familiar faces in Trevon Hamlet and Nyheem Sanders, who will both be transferring from Post University where Donnelly previously served as the head coach.
Hamlet is a six-foot-six sophomore forward who was named third team All-CACC last year after averaging 18 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in just his freshman season.
Rhode Island native Nyheem Sanders also had an exemplary freshman season at Post, averaging 11.5 points per game along with 4 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
Also joining Southern next season is New Haven native Chazz McCarter, a six-foot-three swingman who is transferring in from Gateway Community College where he averaged 22 points per game, 9.5 rebounds, and made 80 three-point field goals last season in being named a Division III JUCO All-American. McCarter will have one year left of eligibility.
Joining Langston in the freshman class will be six-foot-five freshman forward John Scurry who played at Bishop Maginn High School last year in Albany, New York.
