Ken Smith Earns His 700th Win

On Tuesday night, longtime Windsor High School head coach and reigning state champion Ken Smith secured his 700th career victory with a CCC tournament win over East Hartford.

With the milestone, Smith joins an exclusive club alongside current Crosby head coach Nick Augelli (762 wins) and the late Vito Montelli of St. Joseph’s in Trumbull (878 wins) as one of only three coaches in Connecticut history to reach 700 wins.

Over the years, Smith has been a pivotal figure in Connecticut high school basketball, sending countless players on to compete at the next level while winning five state championships along the way.

Now 67 years old, Smith has been at the helm of Windsor’s program for 36 seasons and counting—and once again, he has a talented squad making noise this year.

The guard trio of Missoni Brown, Alex Weaver, and Ji Gary has been a handful for most of Windsor’s opponents, powering the Warriors into Division II contention in the CIAC. This year’s team is young, with just one senior on the roster following the graduation of Tone Williams and others last June.

While Windsor has put together another strong season, their biggest challenge has been 20-1 Manchester High School and its dynamic trio of Derrick Sheets, Will Oden-Tan, and Chance Clark—who have edged them out twice by a combined total of just six points.

Tonight, the two Hartford-area rivals meet for a third time in the CCC tournament, with the winner earning a shot at East Catholic.
