Jason Smith Notches His 650th Win

Tuesday, December 17th, 2024

Over the weekend, Brewster Academy achieved a massive victory by defeating Montverde Academy, handing the program its first loss in 626 days.

This historic win also marked another milestone for Brewster National head coach Jason Smith—his 650th career victory—continuing what is one of the most decorated coaching careers in the country.

The win serves as a fitting testament to Coach Smith’s success. Last year, Brewster Academy’s National team joined the Nike EYBL Scholastic League, a move that took them out of the NEPSAC AAA ranks where they had been amongst the top for years.

Under Smith’s leadership, Brewster won seven NEPSAC AAA postseason championships, and finished at the top of the league’s regular season standings 10 times.

While the National team now competes on a broader stage, the school continues to boast a formidable postgraduate team under Jeff Gore.

Beyond regional dominance, Jason Smith has led Brewster to seven National Prep Championships (2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020), establishing Brewster Academy as a perennial national powerhouse.

Coach Smith’s coaching career, however, had far humbler beginnings.

A New Hampshire native, Smith began coaching as a freshman in college while playing baseball at New Hampshire College (now known as Southern New Hampshire University), following a postgraduate year at Proctor Academy.

By the age of 21, he had already started his own AAU program. That first team produced seven scholarship players, including four at the Division I level—a sign of the program-building success that would later define his career.

Smith’s next stop was Pittsfield High School (NH), where his tenure began with adversity after losing his star player to injury in the season’s first game.

Despite what he dubbed as a rocky start, Smith remained determined, eventually moving on to Bishop Brady to work under Frank Monahan, a former Merrimack College head coach and NBA scout.

At Bishop Brady, Smith served as an assistant coach while also leading the junior varsity squad.

From there, Smith made a brief stop at Notre Dame Prep (MA) for one season.

Finally, in the fall of 2000, Smith joined Brewster Academy as both a teacher and basketball coach—a decision that would lay the foundation for one of the most storied programs in the country. Smith then turned Brewster Academy into a national juggernaut.

Under his leadership, Brewster became known for winning, while also serving as a launchpad for hundreds of student-athletes to reach their dreams at the collegiate and professional levels.

To date, Smith’s program has produced 24 NBA players, 47 G-League players, and over 75 professionals competing internationally.

The list of alumni speaks for itself, with names like Devonte Graham, Donovan Mitchell, Thomas Robinson, TJ Warren, and Will Barton among the many who have thrived under Smith’s leadership.

His impact goes far beyond the wins and titles, creating opportunities for his players to excel at the highest levels of basketball.

In Brewster’s inaugural year in the Nike EYBL Scholastic League, Smith’s squad finished with a 27-7 record and a top-25 national ranking.

This season, Brewster has picked up right where it left off with a 9-1 record that includes victories over Montverde Academy and Long Island Lutheran.

The team enters this year with aspirations of capturing a national title after narrowly missing out on qualifying for the championship bracket last season.

As the wins continue to pile up, so too does Jason Smith’s reputation as one of the top coaches in the history of prep, and now high school basketball. His ability to develop talent, inspire his players, and position his teams for success year after year sets him apart. Few programs can match the consistency, excellence, and legacy that Smith has built at Brewster Academy.

For those eager to witness this powerhouse in action, the next opportunity to catch Brewster’s National team locally will be on January 13th against Central Catholic. To view the team’s full schedule, click here.

With 650 wins and counting, Coach Jason Smith’s career is far from finished—and his legacy as one of high school basketball’s greatest leaders continues to grow.
