Hyland Leaving Gonzaga

Former South Portland star Keegan Hyland has reportedly received his release from Gonzaga after spending the first semester at the Washington school. 

Hyland’s AAU coach Carl Parker confirmed on Friday that the six-foot-three shooting guard would indeed by leaving Gonzaga at the semester break with the hopes of returning to the northeast. 

“In talks with me he has said that he’s staying in the northeast,” Parker said.  “I would be shocked if he doesn’t.” 

Among the schools that have reportedly already shown interest are Maine, Iona, Quinnipiac, Northeastern, Vermont, St. Bonaventure, LaSalle, New Hampshire, Brown, and Columbia among others. 

He is expected to begin taking visits immediately as he has little more than two weeks to make his decision as the start of the second semester is right around the corner. 

Hyland originally committed to Vermont in October of his senior year but that pledge lasted less than 48 hours as he quickly had a change of heart.  After missing all but three games of his senior season at South Portland, Hyland said he would head to Brewster Academy for a post-graduate year and join the class of 2011, but that plan quickly changed when Gonzaga came calling late in the spring with an official visit and subsequent commitment quickly following. 

Hyland didn’t see any game time during his semester at Gonzaga after being sidelined by a concussion but reportedly was cleared to begin working out last week.   

A six-foot-three shooting guard who made shots in bunches throughout his high school career, Hyland would be a valuable mid-season addition to a variety of local programs with his ability to shoot and score the ball from the perimeter.
